I was having a problem with ActiveMQ on my hosted server. Although ActiveMQ is a great message broker it is rather heavy. I was using AMQ as a simple STOMP broker, but it was taking up 200Mb+ of real memory on my 512Mb machine. In most commercial situations I’d just increase the memory of the machine, but I haven’t that luxury for my own hosting. In the end AMQ was bringing the server to it’s knees and I needed to find an alternative. I settled for CoilMQ a Python STOMP broker that works well, is very lightweight, and does what it says on the tin.
